About the Author

Maxwell G. Cooley, of Flint, Michigan, enlisted as a Sergeant in the 10th Michigan Infantry on October 8, 1861 at Byron, Michigan. He was mustered into Company A at the age of 31 on February 6. Cooley was promoted to 1st Sergeant on May 25 and to 2nd Lieutenant on March 31, 1863. Maxwell G. Cooley resigned and was discharged for disability on December 28. He is buried at the Long Beach Municipal Cemetery in Los Angeles County, California.
