Residing in Barry County, Michigan, Private Emmet Cole enlisted at the age of 21 in the 8th Michigan Infantry Company F on September 14, 1861 at Woodland, Michigan. He was mustered into service on September 23. Cole was taken prisoner on June 16, 1862 at Secessionville, South Carolina.
