About the Author
Nathan Church, of Arcada, Michigan, enlisted as a Private in the 26th Michigan Infantry Company C on August 12, 1861 at Ithaca, Michigan. He was mustered into service on September 23 at the age of 21. Church was discharged for disability on January 17, 1862 and was later commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant of Company D on September 15. He served as the Aide-de-Camp for Brigadier General John P. Slough from January 15, 1863 to April 1, 1863. He was promoted to Adjutant on April 15 and then to Captain on April 15, 1864. For gallant services before Petersburg, Virginia, Church was promoted to Major by Brevet on July 6. He served as the Assistant Inspector General of the 1st Brigade from August to September. On April 9, 1865, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by Brevet for conspicuous gallantry and meritorious services during the campaign that lead to the surrendering of the army under General Robert E. Lee. Nathan Church was discharged from service on October 30. He lived in Ithaca, Michigan after the war.Documents for this Author:
