About the Author
Michigan native George W. Chilson lived in Van Buren, Michigan when he enlisted in the 24th Michigan Infantry Company F on July 30, 1862 at Detroit, Michigan. He was mustered into service as a 19-year old Corporal on August 15. Chilson was listed as being wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. He was promoted to Sergeant on May 1, 1864 and then to 1st Lieutenant on May 6. He transferred from Company F to Company D on August 14 and was discharged on June 30, 1865 at Detroit, Michigan. George W. Chilson subsequently served in the U.S. Army until his death on January 18, 1881.Documents for this Author:
