About the Author
John B. Callis, of Potosi, Wisconsin, enlisted in the 7th Wisconsin Infantry Company F on June 10, 1861 as a Captain. He was mustered into service at the age of 33 on June 27. He was listed as being wounded at 2nd Bull Run, Virginia on August 30, 1862 and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1, 1863. At Gettysburg, he was wounded in the chest and furloughed to Annapolis, Maryland and then to Wisconsin on September 1. On November 8, he was hospitalized in Annapolis, Maryland. Callis was transferred from Company F to Field and Staff and promoted to Major on January 5. He was discharged for his wounds on December 29. On May 24, 1864, Callis was mustered into the 7th Veteran Reserve Corps and was promoted to Major. His other promotions include: Lieutenant Colonel, February 11, 1865; Colonel by Brevet, March 13; Brigadier General by Brevet, March 13; and Major by Brevet, March 7, 1867. John B. Callis was discharged from service on May 14. He had subsequent service in the U.S. Army until February 4, 1868.Documents for this Author:
