About the Author

William Bateman, of Lapeer, Michigan, enlisted in the 1st Michigan Cavalry Company C on August 12, 1861 at Detroit, Michigan. He was mustered into service as a 31-year old Sergeant on September 4 and was later promoted to Sergeant Major. Bateman was discharged on October 4, 1862 at Washington, D. C. He re-enlisted in company H of the 9th Michigan Cavalry, as a Sergeant, on March 9, 1863 at Lapeer, Michigan and was mustered in on March 14. On January 17, 1864, Bateman was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and was later promoted to 1st Sergeant on June 20. He was listed as a prisoner of war on December 8 at Cypress Swamp, Georgia and was later exchanged on March 1, 1865. William Bateman was honorably discharged from service on May 15.
