About the Author

Private John Appleton enlisted in the 1st Michigan Engineers Company G at the age of 39 on December 24, 1862 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was mustered into service on January 16, 1863. Appleton had several promotions including: Artificer; Corporal, September 1; and, Sergeant, September 1. He was discharged from service on September 22, 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee.
