About the Author

At the age of 22, Elmer S. Alvord, of Athens, Michigan, enlisted in the 13th Michigan Infantry Company H as a Private on September 7, 1864. He was mustered into service that same day. Elmer S. Alvord was discharged from service on June 8, 1865 at Washington, D.C.
