About the Author
Residing in Kalamazoo, Michigan, James Allen enlisted in Company L of the 5th Michigan Cavalry on August 19, 1862 at the age of 28. He was mustered into service on September 2. He received several promotions including: 1st Sergeant; 2nd Lieutenant, November 2, 1863; 1st Lieutenant, August 9, 1864; and, Captain, February 1, 1865. On September 19, 1864, he was wounded at Winchester, Virginia. He suffered a severe wound in his left arm that required an amputation. On April 5, 1865, he was discharged from service due to his wounds. James Allen died on March 17, 1895.Documents for this Author:
