Regiment: 7th Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Judicary Square Hospital Washington December 15th 1864 Dear Sister You will see by the above that I have change my base since last I wrote On the morning of the 12th inst I received orders to report to the 47th Co 2nd Bat V.R.C. at this place I arrived here about noon of that day & immediately went into winter quarters. I am not yet able to go on duty but think that I shall be before long The 47th Co is composed of 60 men with the usual accompament of non-com, the officer in command is Lieut Smith our 1st Sgt is named Fox Thus far everything looks favorable as the duty is quite light & the food good Soldiers Fare Judicary Square is situated between 4th & 5th St & was before the war simply as the name signafies a square In the summer of 61 a large number of hospital building was erected & ever since has been used for hospital purposes Since that time additions have been made to these buildings until at present it is one of the largest hospitals in the city. To guard this large hospital 2 invalid companies are asigned here for duty the 44th & 47th the latter being my company Your letter of the 11th is before me received to day think that it lay at Cliffburn one day or it would have been received sooner You ask where the 2nd Battalion is stationed The Veteran Corps is divided into the 1st & 2nd Battn the 1st Battn being armed with guns as at the front & are liable to be sent to the within six months after their being asigned While the 2nd Battn are armed with sabers & revolvers and cannot be sent to the front unless the person applies for permission The latter class are supposed to be pretty well used up & their duty is quite light such as guarding hopitals etc… I was glad to hear that A Hughs had at last arrived at home He has had a long siege of it & without a doubt is glad to arrived at home I believe that Edward is right in regard to the regular army officers For instance Gen Fremont has never been to West Point if I remember right I believe that there is some reason for hesitation on the part of Sarah D is going to Milwaukee for I have heard those that were aquainted with Mr Booth give him a very poor character I am glad to hear that several photographs is to come in the next letter But I have nothing more to write so will close Their being several by the name of Bronson in this Hospital to avoid any mistake direct as below I have been to see these namesakes to see whether they were any relation but fail to find any thus far From your brother Spencer Direct to Sergt Spencer H Bronson 47th Co VRC Judicary Square Hospt Washington DC Excuse this short letter as I have not time to write any more before the mail goes out SHB
