Dear Father Cou sin Brothers & Sister I take the earlest opportunity to let you know whare I am & what I have been adoing we arrived at the above names Place Stoped 4 days in the mud & rain without tents wet & cold all of the time. went fr =om thence to Burrsville 5ds march rain & mud to mar ch through camped 2 days started for Richmon 6 “ march 2 ds without a mouth ful to eat some starved some sun struck & died I jumped aboard of the train or I should been gon up before this time. from Richd to now to Elexandra across the River from Washington there we will remain so =me time we expect I was taken with the fever before I left Jackson have been sick ever since & then this Dirreah took me & has run me down weak enough we have some little hopes of getting home before our year is out. but we must do the best we can we are not in strong hands. C. father I wish you would look after my little family & dont let them suffer for the comeforts of life. & if I live to get home or earn anything I will satisfy you for the [ ? ] Please see Loyal Palmer & get the relief find for Sarah. I hav been on a good many battle fields I was on [ ? ] & through V.A. our men have distroyed & burnt evry thing but the land & tried to dig the land up all of over the Land I just been to to dinner hard T. & cold watre it is quite opt to make a man think of home & the surrounging Country my body is here but my mind at home in mich. all the time I often think of poor J Letch =er I rather Sarah would not sell anything until she heard from me again unless it is the mud that is ground for the cows. give my love to aunt Ams Joseph S Jerrys sends & finely all who enqi after me [ ? ] fighting with the Johnny that is plaid out I have seen hund. of thous- of Rebs. I expect to see Go W. & W. at Elex. when I get there Shermans armey is on the march for that Place tell Sarah to get 2 Piggs & she had better raise the calf in order to bring the cow up let him have a little milk. no more at present.
