Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Ambrose E. Burnside, Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson Knoxville Tenn Sept 25 /63 Dear Uncle We have had quite a journey since you left. We have come one hundred and fifty miles (150) over the worst roads I ever saw up and down mountains and across rivers. Quite a number of our wagons upset coming down clinch mountain and a number of mules fell down dead while going up it was the worst mountain we had to cross. We had very easy times as far as the Gap only going about ten (10) miles per day but after we passed the Gap we had it hard the first day we went eighteen (18) miles and the next day twenty two (22) crossed three large mountains and forded two rivers the Clinch and Holsten and arrived at Morristown on the Virginia Central R. R. at eight (8) oclock at night. From there We took the cars to Greenville thirty (30) miles from Morris town when we got there the General found out that the telegraph operator had made a mistake and that we were ordered to Knoxville so we got aboard the cars again and arrived at Knoxville the next morning at day light I think we will go from here to Chatanooga but I do not know. Burnsides is about ten miles the other Side of Bristol on the Virginia Central R. R. the report here is that he has got mudwall Jackson in a tight place and that he has taken quite a number of prisoners. I forgot to tell you that I am in the divisions Provo guard again I was detailed just before leaving Crab Orchard I did not have to carry any Knapsack on the way we have one wagon to carry our rations and knapsacks so I had a very easy time to what the regiment did I have been very well since you left. Our Head Quarters are in the city and the troops are encamped about one mile from the city near the river I have not time to write any more this time so Good Bye [On Envelope:] Martin Geiger Detroit Mich
