Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman Saint Louis May 12th 64 Dear Wife I have a few moments of reflection and will improve them by conversing with you through the blessed comfiture the Pen To night I am not feeling very well was sick all night last night and this forenoon with the sick head ache and fever but am feeling some better now think if I am carefull I will get along all right Edwin is well he is cooking now with John for the Company makes a good cook I tell you we are having lots to do nowadays on guard every other day so you can judge how We have to come to time We mustered for pay some two weeks ago but no pay yet I tell you it is nippin times with the boys for money but I guess it is a good thing as they would pay it out in the city going to the varieties etc. etc. and other places as sometimes corrups the morals and other members of the body I received a letter from you and Duane and I tell you it done me good as I just had a tooth pulled and an old [ ? ], too it was it kept me up for nearly two nights and then I had the Doc flank it this is the military phrase of it Chatfield said he saw an Order at Headquarters this morning stating for the 3rd Mich Cav to be in readiness to move for Memphis in a day or two I hope the order may be revoked but cant say as it will Duane Ewers tells me that Upton was to pay the taxes on that piece of land but if you see him ask him how it is so he wont know of my intentions of buying it for if he should it might make some difference in my getting it of Ewers I think I can trade the share I have in the nursey at Breedsville even with him but dont for certain have not sounded him fully yet How I wish you all could be here this month to go the Sanitary fair it is going to be one of the best things one ever saw Duane how I wish you could be here and go down to the Navy yard they are making two iron Gun Boats and it is a sight worth seeing One would hardly think that man was capable of making such formidable floating Bodies of War they are over two hundred and twenty feet long with siding of iron 1 inch thick outside and in side and filled up with tim bers an India rubber to the thickness of two feet so you see it would be almost impossible for a ball to penitrate such a mass of iron timber & rubber there is not much news now only from Grant and that seems to be good here now and Sherman is doing a good thing where he is hope he may clean the Rebs out of Georgia and if he does it will bring this thing one year nearer to a close than if he gets whiped I tell you this is a pending cricis just now and in my opinion it will decide the coming contest of this nation You see I must close for want of room M. H. Hogmire Kiss my chubb me and tell her so
