ELLSWORTH

Dear Mary
Your very kind
Epistle came to hand last night
and it was interesting indeed
to hear from Old Wisconsin
William has got the measles
and is quite sick. I read
you letter to him last night
he had one also from near
home which I had to read
for him I think he will
recover soon as there has been
a great many sick with
the measles. one man has
died since we came here with
Cholera morbus William’s Capt.
is a very nice fellow, he visits him
often. There is about 100 in the
Regt. sick but that is nothing
compare a with the Rebels
The measels is the principal disease
We have as funny weather
here as in Wis. on day it
will be hot enough to boil
coffee in the sun, and before
the next morning it will be
as cold as possible and not
freeze. it rains about twice
in a week and other things
accordlingly
We are having fun lately
being ordered out to fight, but
the fight has not come yet.
but no knowing how soon
we will have a chance.
The boys are receiving letters
every day. I have just read
one from Wardner Blanchard
They tell me E. Roys is getting
up a company of Soldiers I dont
know as I want to go under him
for a captain would you?
I have not had a letter from
home yet. I have written three
they must write before I do again
Well I reckon the girls
will be in good demand
this fall for school teachers
as most of the young men had
gone from Columbus
about
about every fifth man in our
company are Teachers
We dont get my drop of
liquor in this place which
you know troubles me awfully
it is $50 fine to sell a drink
to a soldier hence there has
not been any of the boys in
the guard house
Well I must close for
you have a better chance to
write than I
Ward and Ellen are doing
a good job for their country
I glory in their spunk
