Mansfield, John

About the Author

John Mansfield was born in 1822 in Mendon, Monroe County, New York. Mansfield was living in Portage, Wisconsin when he enlisted as a Private in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Company G on April 19, 1861. He was mustered into service on April 25 and was transferred from Company G to Field and Staff on January 26, 1863. On July 1, Mansfield was wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and then again on May 5, 1864 at Wilderness, Virginia, where he was also taken prisoner. He received several promotions while serving with the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry including: Captain, April 25, 1861; Major, January 26, 1863; Lieutenant Colonel, July 5, 1863; and, Colonel, February 9, 1864. He was mustered out of service on August 14, 1864. On December 3, Mansfield re-enlisted in the 12th Veteran Reserves Corps as a Colonel. On March 13, 1865, he was promoted to Brigadier General by Brevet. His method and date of discharge is unknown. After the war, he lived in Los Angeles, California and was employed as a lawyer. John Mansfield died on May 6, 1896 in Los Angeles, California.
