About the Author

Captain George H. Stevens, of Fox Lake, Wisconsin, enlisted in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Company A on April 17, 1861. He was mustered into service that same day. On August 30, 1862, Stevens was promoted to Major and transferred from Company A to Field and Staff. He was also promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on January 26, 1863. On July 1, he was wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. George H. Stevens died of his wounds on July 5 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and he is buried at the Gettysburg National Cemetery at gravesite D-10.
