Regiment: 2nd Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Richmond, Virginia Historical Figures: Philip Kearny Camp Second Michigan July 5, 1862 Dear Add, I am safe. I have not time to say much only that I am well and I got through all right and a tough time we had of it. We had to fight every day for Kearny’s Division covered the retreat. We had to carry 150 rounds of cartridges to last us through. Twice I thought we would see Richmond before the rest of the army for there were firings from the front and rear but our men by hard fighting kept them back and we got through all right after all. The mail is a going out so I must quit for this time. I will tell you all about it In a day or so. Give my love to all of the folks. Good Bye Ed A Winchell PS Tell Uncle and Frank that I will write them both the first opportunity. [On Envelope:] A. H. Winchell Detroit Box 484 Mich
