Regiment: 11th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Joseph E. Johnston, William T. Sherman In the Field Near Kenasaw Mt. Ga 1st July 18664 Dear Cousin Phil Your letter of some date was recd. this morning and I was right glad to hear from you as letters are scarce “Away down here in Dixie”. My health continues good considering how unhealthy it is down here. We still continue to ham- mer away at the rebs. just enough to keep them wide awake. We have been in front of Kenasaw since the 14d ult. This may look like a long time for us to remain in nearly our position but I think that Gen. Sherman is in no hurry to rout them from their position. I think he intends to hold Johnston’s army here till Gen. Grant cleans out Richmond. Although we have been in the front nearly all of the time our loss during the month of june was only two (2) killed and four (4) wounded. We were relieved by the 1st Brigade a few days since and are now in reserve. The weather is quite warm and the men are lolling around in fancy costume. We had a very refreshing shower yesterday. It was answering to see the camp kettles, mess pans, old saddles, boxes etc sailing down through the woods. One Com- pany came very near swimming into the Chattahoochie. Today it is quite coolish like I should not be surprised if we were relieved to night, to take our position on the front line Our lines are quite close to the rebel works being not over 15 rods in some places and in others even [ ? ] you will perceive it is necessary to be [ ? ] how we shoot Col. Stoughton is commanding the Brigade and makes a good comman- der. The rebs on the mountain spend a few hours each day in shelling the woods, and some of the iron comes uncomfortably close at times but none have been hit bu them in this regt. Night before last one of our men was wounded by a random bullet so that he died the next morning. Am happy to learn that you are progressing finely with your school and that you still re- tain a portion of your lovable dis- temper. You say two of your scholars are young women, can’t you give me an introduction? Be careful and not get your neck broken on your equestrienne excursions for when I come home with my war horse. I shall want company once in a while Suppose you wouldn’t go just for company would ye! Then you think I am not accountable for what I say. Now that is rich. Now you don’t really think so do you? I wonder if that is the general opinion out there If so, guess I won’t come back just yet. I don’t think your information in regard to if Ws enlisting is correct. yet it may be so. Then you think I have enough trouble of my own That’s another rich nah. Who told ye? I’d like to know the particulars But I must close for the preesnt Remember me to all who may en- quire, write soon & often and direct as usual. Yours Truly L. T. Squire [On Envelope:] Miss. Philura Brinkerhoof Coldwater, Branch Co Mich
