Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Vicksburg, Mississippi Historical Figures: Tennissee Denmark Feb 23rd 63 Dear Jane I Recd your letter last night & hasten to reply to it we are all well & hope you are the same in Burr Oak I am at this time on picket or Guard, have been in this place for nearly 2 weeks have fine times plenty to eat you wrote you were going out to Burr Oak with Daniel & Mary I can say I wish I was there too think I could enjoy myself prety well I would like to hear some good music right well about now. Think it strange that Daniel has not answered my letter I wrote him tell his so it has been a long time since I heard from or saw Edmond in a long time he was well & so was Cub I wish they was with us Jane when you write let me know where little Dan is etc All is quiet in the west & I guess it is on the Potomac too The news came in from Vicksburg last night that our men had made an attack on it with our gunboats Ed has been bothering me & you will have to excuse all mistakes I wish you could be her this morning to se the Boys all feel well Ed has got a fidle 7 we have lots of fun we will stay out here probly for two or three weeks longer it is 12 miles to Jackson it layes east of here our forage train came out last night it seems tough to live on the country let me give you an idea of how they go to work for instance we start from Jackson with one hundred teams & wagons for the country come to a rich old planter house open the gate drive into the barnyard & fill up our wagons without any ceremony & maby go to the smoke house & then a few hams is missing from the old cesesh but dont think I ever have anything Oh, pshaw I cant half write what I want too wish I could be there today but I look for the time to come when I can go home & have enough to live on & enjoy it Jane you wanted to know if you should draw orders do as you are a mind to I can send home enough for you to live on but (every little helps as the old woman said) when it rained) we have the best of weather warm & nice just like spring Ed sends his best wishes to Cain & sais he is going to write to him Now a few words Kena & Earnest Kena be a good girl & dont kiss my little Trudy to much for I want a chance when I get home I hope you have a good school this winter & that you may improve the oppor tunity you have of learning to the best advantage you can for in after life you will see the need of it. Earney I hope the port holes will all be stoped up dont you & we all come home to see Brothers sisters & friends you to must be a good boy & learn too you boath must write to me.
