Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Richmond, Virginia; Vicksburg, Mississippi Historical Figures: Earl Van Dorn, Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson Camp near Waterford Dec 27th 62 Dear Wife & Parents this leaves me well & all of the boys with us I am with the baggage train Edwin Albert & most of Co C & in fact most all of the Cav are after a band of Rebels that came in to Holly Springs & cut our communications off Burnt our stores of Provisions & took all of the sick & some of the well Prisoners but we have made them pay for it. Our men have taken. The report is that 1200 Rebl cav out near Salem they have been out 1 week from camp We were all moving south after Price & did not think of an attack in the rear when Vandorn & Jackson run in to holly springs with about 7000 Cav & we couldnt send any mail & this is the reason you have not Rec. any letters from me I will send one when I do this with five dollars in it & run the chance of your getting it & you may look for some next time I write I would send it all at a one time but dont know as it would go safe We have heard that Vicksburg & Richmond are taken & if so it seems to me that the war must be near to a close one of the boys has come in & I can find out about our boys I have been to see him but he hant been out to them you spoke about Old King dont see him send me some postage stamps Yours in haste MHH Bonesteel is here
