Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: John H. Morgan Camp near Lagrange Tenn. August 3rd 63 Dear Uncle & Aunt, It is with pleasure I take this opportunity of informing you of my present health which is very good & so if all of the rest of the boys. Edwin has been sick but he is well now hope this may find you well & enjoying life which of course you are for there is nothing to prevent as I can see We received a box from [ ? ] & believe me if put us in mind of times that have been much beter to us all but those times have gone past perhaps never to return & if they should I think we might know how to apreciate them the more We were very thankfull for the many little things that the box contained & hope we may be able to reward you with as much All is quiet in camp today but day before yesterday we had a sad occurrence. Martin Garver & five others went to twon got on a fight were arested by the patrolls or guards but they were permited to carry their pistols the men had had not gone far when a halt on the part of Garver’s side ensued & they said if the patrolls were better men than they were they would go & if not they would not the seargent thinking perhaps they had better let them go went & see the Lieutenant of the guard & he said take them to the guard Ho use the seargent went in persuit but the boys seeing them comeing run but the sergeant ordered them to halt but they heded him not, but his men fired & the result was that Mart got shot through the bowels & died before next morning he was wounded on the raid down in Miss & had not got well so much for drinking. It was one of the 2nd Iowa that shot him & they run a mule over another & hurt him very bad they said Mart praied all of the time after he was shot We have to stand guard every other day what do the neighbors think about the progress of the war & the prospects of a war with France Henry I tell you I was glad to hear of Morgans Invasion in to Ohio & Indianna & I almost wish he had made a call on some of the people of Van Buren think perhaps there would have been some inlisting on double quick time (or hunting deer up north) I suppose the Bigelows are all in favor of peace as much as ever, on any terms But let me tell you on what terms I want peace I want peace when every traitor north as well as south wiped out & I am willing if it be necessary to stay & help do it & here let me say I think it a disgrace on the race of Hogmires that they dont turn out & try & help put down the rebellion Just think what will their Children say of them if they have any & it is quite likely they will Pa was you in the war to help crush the rebellion or was you a so called Copperhead but enough of this When you answer this give us all of the news & I want you to answer it dont be particular for I like to hear from home & I hope the time is now [ ? ] far distant that we may go home to enjoy the peace we have fought for give my best repects to all of Uncle Allens folks & Nobles too tell Milan he had better stay at home & help his father write soon I wrote home but 1 or 2 days ago how does the nursery look Excuse all mistakes Mitchell H.
