Dear Father and Mother I have just received your very kind letter and as I have nothing to this afternoon I thought that I would try to write you a few lines in reply to yours. I am well at present and in good Spirits I do not want to be discharged. what makes you think that I want my discharge did I ever write any thing that made you think I was dissatisfied if I ever did I did not intend to. if I was dissatisfied I never would let you know it I would it through the three years before I would send for you to get me out. I perfectaly satisfied here. I like Camp life as well as I expect to the boys are busy building log shantes and covering them with their tents. a great many of them have built small fire places in them so that they are quite comfortable. Our Orderlys name is Enoch Cross from Vixbure and a poor misrable d-l he is to. I miss Nahum a good deal H E Hascal is our Lieut. yet C Sherman is second Lieutenant in General Banks body guard. I like Captain Acker first rait. Col Broadhead has not as many friends amongst the boys as at Camp Lyon I do not like Maryland as well as Michigan. the Country between here and Washington is very poor. but around here it is pretty good land the farmers around here do not keep a great deal of stock but the best horses that I ever saw the most of the farmers around here are pretty well off have very nice houses there is plenty of darkies here. Wednesday Jan 15 Well this is a very stormy morning and I have nothing to do but to write I will try to finish this letter I was not at the Grand Review, in presence of the President and his Cabinet some of the boys from our Company went but I was not able to go.
