Regiment: 4th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Paw Paw July 15, 1862 My dear Davidson Yours of 11th I have. As appearances are at present I shall enter the army. I have agreed to go in with Melchor as his 1st Lieut. You know what sort of a man he is. If I had taken Captaincy (which I could have had) he would have thrown cold water on enlistments; and it will take the influence and hard work of all to fill up a company now. Rather than have the project break down I will go in under him. It is very hard work to enlist men now. We may fill up a company after harvest. As it is I shall not go to New York at present. Maybe after I get my blue clothes and brass buttons. I may call. You had better be in no hurry to get back. Stay as long as you want. If anything should happen to call you back here I will let you know. I wish you would send me P.St.G. Cooke’s Cavalry Tactis in 2 vols approved Nov 1, 1861 or the latest. If you can also send me $50 of the $55 received from the Dr. I shall be obliged. If you have not $50 of it send what you can, as this job is going to be ex- pensive. Volunteers are as scarce as icicles in this part of the country. Gov Blair has called on the state for eight new regiments. They must draft to get them. Tell my friends in N.Y. that I shall try to see them this summer or fall. We are expecting to hear bad news from the South every day. Nothing from Willy yet. Love to all. Yours affecly R.B.
