George Ball resided in Ottawa County, Michigan when he enlisted as a Private in the 3rd Michigan Infantry Company B on May 13, 1861 at Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was mustered into service at the age of 18 on June 10. On May 15, 1864, Ball was transferred from the 3rd Michigan Infantry to the Veteran Reserve Corps.
