About the Author

Lewis B. Thayer, of Jackson County, Michigan, enlisted in the 1st Michigan Infantry Company D as a 23 year old Private on July 2, 1861. He was mustered into service on September 16 and was listed as in a Maryland hospital in March 10, 1862. Lewis B. Thayer was discharged from service on April 1 in Annapolis, Indiana.
