Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Abraham Lincoln, William S. Rosecrans Army of the Potomac Nov. 5th 1863 My Mary. My Own Dear Wife. We are still inactive though reports thick and fast have been our guests since my last to you. Time flies so swiftly I hardly know when my last to you was written. of one thing I am certain no word from you has reached me since. The weather has been lovely the past week but still reminding one like a beautiful picture that there are two sides and the morrow may bring storms and tempest. I have received orders if Capt. Baker does not report himself by the tenth of this month to drop him as a deserter which if done will doubtless end in his being cashiered. It is evident he does not intend to return and I know his wife wrote him last winter. she had rather he would be dismissed the service than not come home. Election returns indicate that the Republicans have carried every thing in the October Elections they made a clean sweep and now even Maryland has gone in favor of the administration. A. Lincoln by these signs will be the next Pres= ident. he is the head of the Nation in something besides the name. And whatever the obstacles in his path his foot must crush it. he sees and acts not for to day alone. the future must be provided for. The removal of Rosecrans may have been for disobedience of orders or incom- petency, but I doubt it. There must be no Military Chieftain to aspire to the Presidency in /64 I do not for a moment doubt the Policy nor its success. he is equal to the task and I am bound to support him for the eight years My love to all Love and kisses to my Darling Sis.                                          Gardner [On Envelope:] Mrs. Gardner B.
