Dec the 17 1863 In Camp Near Holston
river Tenn Wall my dear wife glad
boy was I to hear from you once

this day comes the glad lines
from you wall Sina I am on picket
to day I went on last nite it
raind all nite and most all day
but the rain is stoped and cleard
off Sina the time that we had
yesterday was hard Sina I will
say something of it our ridg
and the 7 Ohio 2 Ohio went
down a bout 12 miles and the
drove the rebs picket In and
they fell back on still they Cav
on to ther main armey ther
we fell in to line of battel
on they come 3 brigads on to
3 ridgments of the [ ? ]
fiting

but we held them for 2 ours
and was oblige to retreat on
[ ? ] clear back 12
miles our loss was small
thers we dont kno they
folowed ous and pick up
ther ded the day before that
we the same ones fout this
side of there all day and
drove them and killed lots
of them and onley lost one
killed 20 wounded but
they got the start of ous but
to day the Generel sent out a scout
and about tomoro I think we
will try them a gain too of
ther men just come in to
our camp they say old
longstreet has got 20 thousand
and old Jackson has got 15
thousand but we have got
60 thousand her and can git
30 thousand in 20 fore ours
so I think we can stand them
a small fite Sina you think
this is coming to a close in
a short time but I think
not Sina I fot got to tell
you I am well and tuff
