Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Richmond, Virginia Historical Figures: Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant Harisons Fery Tenn July 4th 1864 How are you Met how and whare do you find you self this fine fourth of July? Enjoying your self first rate I hope. Of course you are. I am well to day and enjoying myself as well as I can up here in the woods I havent been doing an thing to day but fery a few folks across the river. Never the less I have enjoyed my self pretty well because I know I cant help it if I cry my eyes out. Some of the boys have gone over to Harison to day (a little town just a cross the river and a little way down) but I thought I had as leave stay in camp. We had a first rate dinner today and we made it supper to I bet. I supose I must tell you what I had for dinner, that is providing you tell me what you had. We had fresh mutton, bread, blackbury pie, custard, bread pudding, sweat cake and tea-Etc. Now if that want a good dinner then I dont know. We are just more than putting on, still up here in the woods. If you have as nice a day up thare as we do to day you will have a good day for the wind blows just enough to make it cool and pleasant. Thare is some talk of our going up the river a bout either-teen miles in a week or two. I supose you know that Ike with the rest of the company K boys have gone to the front or near thare. They did not know how far they would have to go. We will eather go up the river or to the front, I dont know which yet and I dont care much for it wouldent do any good if I did. Seeing I cant see you this fourth I will send you a ring if you will except it. It isnt a very costly ring but it is kind of a pretty ring. Thare is a man in our sompany that makes them. I havent any letter from you in most two weeks and I dont know but quite when I go longer than a week without a letter it seems a good while. I write one a bout every week whether I get any or not. I think I had ought to have one before long. We dont get the mail as often here as we did at Chattanooga. Sabin and Myron are well with the exception that Sabin has got sore eyes consiterable. Ike and the rest of the boys was well the last I saw of them just before they started. I dont know when I shall see them a gan. I wonder how Grant is selebrating the fourth down at Richmond today. I hope it will fall to day when I would think thare was some chance for the war to over, but it has got to fall sooner or later for I dont believe he will give it up. The longer Lee stays in Richmond the more he is getting whipped, I think. My sheet is full. If I have time before the mail goes out I will write some more if not, Good by George
