Chaplain Huntley Dear Sir You will probably be surprised to recieve a letter from a prisoner of war who is comparatively a stranger to you; but you will pardon me for this intrusion when you concider my unhappy situation and the motives which induced me to write. My health is as good as could be expected under circumstances, although I am far from being well, for I am suffering vary much with a bad cold. In view of my presant condition and the approaching winter (which must bring misery to many a poor captive) I have resolved to ask the Sanitary Commission through you to send me some clothing. Any clothing would be vary thankfully recieved  although I am most in need of pants, shirts, and underclothes, my pants and shirt being nearly wourn out if you conclude to comply with my request you will please direct to Lieut J D Scofield prisoner of war Richard jail Columbia S.C. Care of St. Col. Stwart S Woodford. Maj. Gen. Foster’s staff. The lid of your box must be put on with screws to facilitate an enterance for all boxes are examined before coming through the lines. There are now confined in this prison the following named Michigan Soldiers Capt Dicy 1st Mich S.S.  come St Randall St Barnard 20th Mich Inft St Baird 23rd U. St Col. [  ?  ] and myself. The most of these officers are as destitute as myself I have not heard from the Regt sinced was captured although I have writen to the QuarterMaster and several others let me know what has become of my Brother (Capt R. H. Scofield) I think he must be dead or mortally wounded or he would write me If our friends at home fully realized our condition here, they would offer up daily supplications for our deliver once. Write as soon as you receive. Give my love to the Officers and remember the poor prisoners in your prayers to Almighty God. Vary Respectfully you Obdt. Servt. T. D. Scofield 1st Lieut 1st Co. S.
