I am in washington we are camped on meridian hill in a grove of Oaks about three miles from the Potomac and about one from the white house we can look all over the city we have not not got our pay yet and I dont know when we shall we have got our sabers and belts and expect to get our guns and revolvers this week it is as cold here as it was in grand rapids the darkies are as thick here as the white folks are we are having a good time they say that we are a going to stay and guard the city for the next two years I have not had time to go through the capitol but I shall go before long I saw General McClelan the other day he is a good looking man I should like to come and spend the hollidys up in Grand Rapids I hope you will have a good time it is time for supper so good by Remus Rogers Cathrine Hamilton [On Envelope:] Miss Cathaine Hamilton Grand Rapids Kent Co Mich Union & Constitution [Eagle, shield with flag, and a laurel wreath]
