Regiment: 2nd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: St Louis, Jan 1st Wensday         1862 Dear Father I received your letter this afternoon with pleasure and was glad to hear of your ecelant health my health is good now I am getting along first rate getting fat to. the rest of the boys are all well. I wish you all a happy New Year in this letter and hope you will have a good dinner to day as well as myself we had an oyster dinner to day. I would like to of been home last night or up to Mrs. Hills I suppose they had a fine time to the dance. But mine was a differant kind of a dance I went to watch meeting last night watching on guard I was on guard last night I watched the old year out & the New Year in I went on guard just five minutes before twelve and came off at 4 Oclock. I don’t know as there is much news here at presant. Chan is on post guard to day we have had three good dinners since Christmas but I guess we have had our last, there has two men died out of the company that is in Barracks with us another not expected to live that is company H. Capt. Newman the prospects now is that we shall soon go to Kentucky I was in hopes we would got to Mich- igan. We have changed our old cook for a new one I guess we have bettered our selves. Frank just got a letter from home and it makes him feel down harted, my provisions are not quite gone yet I have got a pie & some cookies & fried cakes & some wine yet & [    ?    ]. it says in Franks letter that lib Deal & Nell set up with Mrs Bartlett I dont see how they could muster up courage for that give my best respects to all From Your Son Chas.
