Regiment: 6th Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp at Rappahannock Sept 3rd/63 Dear Brother + Sister It is over a month since I heard from you and I do not know what to think wheather you are all sick or So busy you have no time to write I have waited as long as I can for an answer to my last hope I will have better Success this time  I am well we are encamped on the North Bank of the Rappahannock river  We have a splendid camp streets running North and south shade over each “tents” raised 18 inches from the ground we are on duty most all the time we do two days Picket duty then lay in camp 1 day then 3 days garrison duty in the “Trenches” on South side of the river  Ouc Co has 10 privates for duty in Co. An increase of 3 since I wrote you last  There is a report that 60,000 Rebels crossed the River 18 miles below Frederricksburg If it is true  We may see Washington in less than one week  A trip I do not care about taking for we have traveled it so many times  Also a report that we are going to Wisconsin to do provost duty  We have no faith in that  It would be to good a thing for the 6th I received a letter from Fannie She is well Her school is out  She is stopping with a Mrs. Furgeson in Franklin She cleared $30.00 this summer They was all well at home the last letter I received from them While on picket one of Co “B” Boys went to a house outside the lines and got a Richmond paper of 28th Aug  They think their chances are slim at Charles- ton also that that old thief Floyd had breathed his last  And that Some Yankee raiders had been repulsed at Bristol Station that is Some 20 miles in the rear of our Army  It gave an account of the daring attack and capture of two Yankee Gunboats on the South Rappahannock  told how they had to climb bulwarks 8 feet high covered with nettings it is about 8 feet high to the top of the Smoke Stacks and the men and officers were all Cowards to let the Rebels capture them  We are getting whiped all over to believe all it said Wyman is well sends his compliments to you and Algina I will now close with my love to all hoping to hear from you soon  I remain Your Affectionate Brother Mair Pointon
