Regiment: 6th Wisconsin Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Camp Francis Va aug 6th/62 Dear Brother + Sister I red you last over a week ago while out on a reconnoitering expedition towards Orange Court House The force was commanded by Gen Gibbons (commanding Gen) There was 2d Wis Regt – our Regt of his Brigade = one of Gen Patricks 30 N.Y. 2 Squadrons of cavalry from Harris Light Cavalry and one Squadron of 3d Indiana Cav. also Washington’s Battery of artillery We took the plank – road to Gordonsville within 10 min of that [  ?  ] and [  ?  ] nearly to Orange Court House which was occupied by a much superior force of the enemy   We found out all we wanted to know So have commenced our march back to Fredricksburg the Rebel Cavalry followed close They attacked the rear Guard once But was repulsed I dont think there was any Killed the rear guard captured one Cavalry man No loss on our side Our Brigade is out on just such another trip they took two days rations and      sent them 89 more they started yesterday morn about 2 o’clock I was left – behind I have had the Diarrhea for 3 days before they left So I thought I had better Stay at home Ever Since they had gone we have heard about them Skirmishing with the Rebels all the time along the road We cant believe any of them for there is so many The report was that our Boys had been fighting a great number Killed An orderlie for Gen Gibbons came back last night reported the Indiana Cavalry to have been fired into by a battery behind a brush fence But the Infantry had no Skirmish So that Settled the thing with us I think this expedition is to burn the Bridge on N. and S. Anna Rivers They are about 10 miles from Hanover Court House if they burn them they cant reinforce Jackson By R.R. at Gordonsville from Richmond and with the force that is here now we can whip Jackson Gen Burnside with his command are here they came By way of Aquia Creek They are a tough looking set of Boys They look as though they could fight They act now as though playing war was played out I guess old Jackson will think Pope is a big mouthful The Southern papers talk about him eating up Pope It is very hot here now and we cant get any cooling drinks for the SD cant get any Supplies from Washington Government has put a stop to it There was a man Selling ice cream 25 cents for a little Sauce dish full they charge us high for Everything we The doctor told me not to drink coffee But tea I had to pat at the rate of $2.00 per pound for it 7 Shilling per ounce That is pretty high price We have been having Some premotions in our co Orderly Sargt. is promoted to Sargt – Magor of our Regt They are both capible of holding – their positions As Soon a the Boys get Back I will write and let you know I must now close with my best love to Both and a Kiss for Baby From your loving Bro.
