Regiment: 6th Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Benjamin Butler march 20 1864 dear friend sarah I got your letter 3 weeks ago to day and we started our raid that knight and we got last frida and to day is sunday it is warm and nise to day we had a hard time and agood time we went in site of richmond and we burnt cars and tore up rail road and got bacon I had a pack horse and the boys would get bacon and ham and I packed it on my hors for the boys for we had to get our grub along the road we saw butlers negro troops and they are good looking soldiers they are big men and stout we went [  ?  ] and then we tooke the boat and went to portsmouth and stade there one knig ht and then we came back on the boat and we past the rip raps and fortres manson then we tooke the boat for washington the boat was 3 hun dred feat long we was at alexandr 3 dyes and I went to circus and I had a good time not so good a time as sam and I had to the circus one time when there was som girls a long the time they made us sit down on the ground that [  ?  ] was oneal that lived near [  ?  ] you must excuse me for not writing sooner for I did not hav time giv my lov to all but I expect there lov is small for me write as soon as you get this from your afectionate friend            Fred Kettle to sarah hamilton fred to Sarah H.
