Mich Cavalry Little Rock Arkansas May 24th 64 Dear Wife You will see by the heading of this that We are once more in the field and in the land of the enemy But I can say this leaves us all well but a few of the new recruits and they have only the Dysentery and of course they all will have to go through a course of them Edwin is out on picket to day and is well When last I wrote to you we were about leaving for where we did not know but we shiped on board of the steamer and sailed south to Memphis here we saw Milan and he came on board with us and is with us now there is an Order for all of the Bob Tails to report since I left St. Louis John Bonesteel received a letter from Carl just as we left there stating you had nearly killed yourself by falling no pen can described the thougs an feeling I have had ever since I would have applied for a furlough but Elder Harmon said it would not avail any thing as they would not give any more let the case be what they might I am in hopes that I may get a letter to day as the mail came in yesterday and went over the river and Harmon has gone over after it now and I will not finish this until after he comes back I have writen three since I have received any from you a home We had a nice time coming down the River all was quiet it took us seven days and nights to make the trip We are now camped on the north side of the Arkan sas River right opposite of the city and close to the shore the river is very rily now and always is at this season Dear Jane You will know it is night now & I am seated by my box to fin ish my letter I have waited for the mail to come in all day but no mail as yet and I have to go on picket tomorrow so I will have to finish this so it will go out tomorrow I was over on the other side of the River yesterday it has been once a nice place but War has laid waist to the hansomest of the town it is as large as Kalamazoo but not as nice Our commander at this point is Steel and the most of the troops think him a rebel at heart he bords with his sister in town and her Husband is Old Prices Chief of Cavalry now in the Rebel Service what do you think of that here let me say what I think of it it is this if we had less of such Generals in command this war would the sooner come to an End and it never will until this is the case it is reported that our troops have been defeated above here how true it is we cant say But I pray not bad I saw the 10 Illinois that came in from a scout of 7 days to day and they had one man killed while out on the scout the man was killed white on picket But I dont think it will be our lot to go on a scout very soon as we have not got a horse yet and dont know when we will have Drawn our Carbines and sabers and have to do Duty Dismounted and will in my mind until my time is out Now Jane write often and I will do the same if you ant well enough have some of the rest write for you and let me know all the news of the Army of the Potomac and just how you hurt you and All the news in general kiss our hope for me and tell her Pa sent it to her Give am go ing to write to them next Mitchell H.
