Dear Wife
I have taken this opportunity to infor
m you of my health and also of
the receiption of your letter which
bears date of June 24 You will
think it strange perhaps of its tary
on the road but we only get mail
when a fleet of boats come in
not oftener than once in 3 weeks
But write just as often I will get
them some time Now as to our
health mine is good and so is
Edwin. Arbs also Milan has
the Dysentery not dangerous
Andrew has the fever but
is getting along now quite smart
Hod is sick not dangerous
Nicolas Newman was
buried yesterday was sun
struck he lived near Charley
Broughts in Geneva there has
been more death in our Regt
since we have been here than all
told since I enlisted they have
died on an average of 1 per day
for the last 17 days None have
died as yet out of our company
and none dangerously sick
now
Yesterday we drew our horse
s the talk was that we were
going back to Memphis
but since we drawed horses
will have to abandon that
Idea I think the Regt will be
much more healthy as soon
as they commence scouting
for then we will get something
green to eat which we have
not had since we have been
here as to the news here in
this Department all is still
nothing going on either side
I received a letter from Spence
stating he was well and that
there was not any news from
the army of the Potomac only that
Grant had demanded the surrender
of Petersburg Harvey received
a letter from his Brother stating
he was well but had had an
awfull sight of fighting lately
I also heard that Henry Sherwood
was shot near Atlanta in a fight
also a Lamphear from Lawrence
Our boys some of them think we
have it rough But I am satisfied
to stop here it is not very healthy
but our loss dont begin to compare
with the loss of other Regts in the field
to be sure it is more pleasant to be in
Active service and the front But
there is more hardships to endure
The report is current here that
Sherman is within 5 miles of
Atlanta I hope it may be true
for I think that the taking Atlanta
will be of far more service to our
troops than Richmond and it is
my opinion of the two places At
lanta will be taken first how I
would like to hear of the taking of
Either and know it to be true
But I have my doubts whether
that news will come very soon
or not Jane I was talking
with Major Wilcox this mor
ning and he told me my time
would be out this fall and I
hope it will be so let some of our
home pimps come out and try
it It will give them an apetite
for home viands I am glad the
three hundred dollar clause is struck
out We want men not money
But I have to close for want of
room Kiss trudy for me take a
share to yourself give my best
