Lagrange July 15th 63
I received your kind letter the 13th & now
as I have a few moments to spare will answer
it When I last wrote Edwin was not very
well but he is now returned to duty &
is growing fat I received a letter from
Mother & they were all well but Duane has
a lame back R. C. Nyman has got home
Now before I go any farther lets Hurah
for Vicksburg, Port Hudson & the invas
ion of Lee in Pennsylvania & Morgan
in Indiana for the first we have reason
be glad that the fall of their strong hold did
not make more of our men bite the dust &
for the invasions that it will strengthen
our army by awaking them up to their
duty at home I mean those that have been dila
tory about enlisting & also those contempt
able peace criers who are willing to have
peace at any rate & let the Union slide but
I say we will have peace when we crush
this rebellion & how are we to do it by staying
at home do you think & cry peace peace
when there is no peace. ah it does me goot to
think there is some at the north the rebs
think of them that they will leave the sunny
south & even endanger their lives to from
an acquaintance by appearing at Corydon
Indiana where there is those that will be glad
to receive them But I presume that you
will think I have give you quite a lecture
this time now jane I want you to keep up
good courage & dont worry about me for I am
going to come home yet & think I will repay
you for your kindness then you ask me if
Ben Ewings is true to his wife I think he is
Now you must try & learn little Trudy to be good
which I know you will Jane I have a secret
to tell you in my next letter about something
I and another man found it is a bag of gold
& is enough to make us well off dont let any
one see this part you will have
