Michigan Volunteer Cavalry 1st Reg’t, 1st Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, Army of the Cumberland Camp, Near Chattanooga, 1863 Dear Clara I now write you a few lines more it is a long time sence I halve hird from you ar writing to you I got your last letter but did not halve time to write to you before we had to go on a raid and you now that I could not write then we left Steaphenson and went to Bridgeport then Carost Sand mounting in Wills Valey then crast look out mounting near Roane and had two fights then back to to Wills Valey staid thare one night then went back to the same plase on Saderday we had a fight on Sunday we had a nother one and was nicely whipped and flanked and cut off from the main army but we maid our way to Chattanooga and got from them we had bout for thousand strong with us and the rebles for times our number then they sent our rigment up the river to gard it so we are hear about fifteen miles above Chattanooga we had three slitley wounded, in our Co we halve better times now then we halve had for a month they ar all Union hear and we by all that we take from there they are so pleased to see us that the girls will run out and meet the soldiers and kiss them but I halve not met with eny of that kind yet but they are glad to see us coming and some of them varey pritey this battle is a [     ?     ] one thousands of good men has gon under the sad and probley meney more will sink the rebs was down to see us yesterday I and another man was over the river last before they came and got back but [   ?   ] I was three of black smiths over working in a shak thare and the rebles took them but we was or near to quick for them I must close soon for I halve to go on duty my paper is so dirty that I am a shamed to send it to you and a pen tied on a stick to write with, you must excuse this and write soon yours for ever Ira Graves to Clara
