Regiment: 3rd Michigan Cavalry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Sanantonio Texas September, 25, 1865 Dear Sister   It is with pleasure that I take my pen in hand to inform you of my health which is good at the present time hopeing when these few lines reaches you may find you all the rest of the famly well, as I have just come off from guard this morning I thought I would bisy myself by writeing although I have not much to write, but I will endever to doe the best I can. Since we have been here we have been on a march of about 15 days to a place called Eagle Pass on the Rio Grand River. We went as an escort for General Sheridan, on this marched we suford a great deal on account of water + also of eatables, we had to march from 50 to 60 miles before finding water & when we did find it it was hardly fit for hogs to walow in & our hard tack was chuck full of bugs & worms, but we are in camp now & have prety fair living, we have lots of duty to doe now there is five cos of us doeing provost duty in town, we come on guard every other day, prety near regular we have been paid 4 months pay & I have sent to pa by express the sum of $60.00, & as soon as he resieves it I want you should write & let me know immediately. John Ackson is dead he was shot by a gurilly about 2 miles from this city on his return to camp. I guess I have writen all the particulars there is not much prospects of our coming home before new years & I don’t know as thare is then. I am afraid we shal have to stay our time out if we doe I think I can stand it if any body for I never was healthier in my life & if we have to stay I will stay like a man. Thare is a great meany disertirs every day. Thare was one fellow in our co that was put on guard at the prison & he let out 2 prisoners & also fun away himself with them. I am on my last half & I think it out kill me if I have to stay the rest of my time, but it is hopefull that I wil, no moe at present from your brother N.B.
