Regiment: 28th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: November 27, 1864 Cave City, Kentucky Dear wife and loving wife, I remember of leaving you in tears a short time ago a short way from the house. I shall remember it a great while. I reckon you will too but I will be at home before two months roll away if nothing happens to me. I have sent for a transfer into the Navy of the United States of America on the high seas. I shall get it in two weeks after I get to Nashville. Then I will come home on a furlough for a short time. I have learned something I never knew since I have been out here. I will be glad to see you again in this world and I am bound to I reckon right smart. Since I wrote the other side, we have received our mail from Nashville. I did not get any news from home but I did expect a letter from you. I have sent you seven letters, 3 song books and 2 papers. I think there is a nigger in the fence somewhere or you would have gotten some of them. Mose got a letter from Almina since I begun this letter; says you have not gotten any letters from me I want you to send a line to Nyman and tell him not to send any leters by any body but lon he is big enough to go after them once a weak and I will send every week with out fail I want to know if Al gave you fifty dolars I sent by him and what he has down with his mother and what he is doing There is a cave here in this place from which it derives its name that is two hundred feet deep and seven miles long. I went into it as far as I could without a light. The Mammoth Cave of Kentucky is over ten miles from here. We have been here two days waiting for our train to cross the river. Crossed it Thursday. We will leave here tomorrow morning on our way to Nashville. The war news is very encouraging. We have not seen anything that wanted to fight yet. I want you to write about our children if you have enough to write about. If you have not, I will come home and make some for you. I think I could do it without much trouble I reckon right smart in my leters I tolde you the most that was of interest to you I am anxious to have a leter from you this is the 8th leter I have rote to you I want you to be sure that the neighbors don’t take any letters out of the office for you. For I know to my certain knowledge that some of them has opened letters that did not belong to them amy if you get this I know you will answer it rite off direct your letter to amos gibbs Co G 28 Mich Vol Infantry via Louisville Kentucky This is from one who would like to bee with his family to night good by my loveing companion for to night dear
