Regiment: 28th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: November 11, 1864 Camp Nelson, Kentucky Dear Wife, I still think of thoe we air meny miles from each other I can see you in my sleep if no oter time that is some consolation there is a great many men here who, as soon as they were out of sight of their families, they forgot all the vows and promises they have sworn to keep. There is many a poor wife left at home who in parting with them agreed to keep the vows they made when they were free. I can not think of every unkind word or thought I ever had since we were married, but I know you will forgive me. I know I should hate to come home, as some men will in this regiment, they will be afraid every day of families hearing of their conduct while here. I have seen something of it. I have known men to go to their neighbors here where they were writing and beg of them not to say anything about them. God forbid I should do anything I would be afraid my wife and children would hear of. I began this this morning. I got 10 lines wrote when I was called on to go to nibolvill to guard our train in here. We will start from here tomorrow morning for Nashville, Tenn. We have six miles of train to guard. It is for Sherman and consists of 600 wagons, 200 head of beef cattle and as many mules. It is one hundred and ninety-six miles from here. You wanted to know if I owed Jake Beary I helped him in harvesting a year ago last harvest I helped him one day and a half I charged him too dolars and a half I had of him one half a bushel of potatoes for 25 cents I had one cow bell at fifty cents he draw one load of corn or six [ ? ] he was a bout to ours at it he said it was worth about fifty cents then I helpt him cut drafts of wood part of one fore noon and I had his oxen to draw some pumpkins one load was all for it that makes the choping right so I have had one dolar and 25 cents and leaves one dolar and 25 cents comeing to me that is the way we stand I am in a hury to hear from the baby and the rest of Children and my companion in life.
