Regiment: 5th Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Sunday 14th of July 1861 Steamer Mississippi [  ?  ] Fort Wayne Dear Parents As Sunday with its accustomed quiet comes around. I begin to think of home and friends and will devote the hour to writing to you. This has been in pleasant week in camp so far as the weather is concerned but I have been a little aquerish and must sick for the last few days but feel some better this morning guess I shall be all right in a day or two Thursday evening I received a call from Dr. Kane of Detroit a brother of uncle John Kane liked his appearance very much he is nearly sixty years old but fine looking the next day I went up town + called at his office he enquired after you all said his brother had lost his seemed boy a few months ago. Friday I spent the day in the city took dinner with Dr. Loring (an old college chum) went into the Rupell House and saw Mr. Masin and had a little chat with him Looked over the Hotel Register saw Dr Littlefield Cold- Water after a little I found him, he had been up to the fort looking for me; he was as jolly and fat as ever he had come come down for the purpose of buying some [  ?  ] for Brad I came up to the fort with him and showed him around + kept him until after tea. This morning we had what is termed “Inspection” everything must be in tip top order arms quarters +c the stuff officers came around to the hospital and paid it a fine compliment for its order + clean- lines they thing I am beating the old surgeon three men are in the hospital one quite low had fever. it has left him very weak doubtfull about his getting well. Last evening I got a new fatique dress Gray like my last but a fine fit compared with my old ones This morning the fifth regiment went to turn to church on the steamer [          ?          ] they all looked fine with their new uniforms I want you to keep a good watch for a fine young horse. one that can be bought cheap for about ½ down + the balance on 4 or 6 months time. If we are ordered out of the state I shall want me to ride. I am entitled to a servant + he can take care of it for me. I have got a young (abolishinist) negro to take care of my room + black my boots and the like but he is not big enough to take with me. There is as yet of cause much doubt as to wheather we will leave the state or not will know in the coasse of a week or so and then we will either be paid off and sent home. or else the companies will be fillid up and started off I received a letter from the 4th Regiment last week they were all in ifre spirits but not doeing much as yet Just as soon as I get some money I will send that 5 home to Bill Willson if he wants it you must pay it if you have to borrow am sure of some money about the 1st of August, perhaps a little before. Shall not come home until about that time. as then it will be determined about our going But I must close as I am wanted to see the Dr Major Shake with the [  ?  ] Robert
