Regiment: 1st Michigan Engineers Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: U.S. Sanitary Commission N.York City March 9th/65 After riding night and day since left Bridgeport, laying one day at Mufressburo, I find myself at this strange place waiting further orders which I expect will be to go to Governors Island and there wait transportation to Savanah. You may bet that I have had a rough time of it. I was on guard from Louisville to Indianoplis and like to froze to death, like to fell off once fell across the space between the carr, my hat blew off and I charged bayonet on it and captured it. From Indianapolis we passed through the State of Ohio via Gristline to Pitsburg PA, then to Harrisburg, from there to Philadelphia, passing through the state of New Jersey to South Amboy, then a short ride on board a steamboat brought us to N.Y. City. where we found some of the Bridgeport Bummers that left the day before. I did one of them is George, the fellow that waited on the table, I have seen some very nice country since I left Rebeldom. The State of New Jersey is a very nice faced country. Pa is rough, we crossed the Mts in the night and did not see much of them. The most fun is on me, I got lost the first thing in this city. I went into a shop to buy some apples and when I came out the detachment had moved and I dare not go after them for fear that I would get further into the wilderness, so I called out Police, on came a flat cap with club in hand and marched me double quick until i cought the boys making things all right again. No more this time, I amsir with respect you friend E.R. Dunham Address E.R Dunham Co “E” 1st reg Mich Eng & Mech Savannah Georgis, via N.Y.
