McClellan Near the Weldon Railroad September 4th 1864 Dear Cousin I now take my pen in hand to inform you that I am well I received your kind letter of the 25th and Glad was I to hear from N. H. after so long a time. On the 29 of last month we commenced our fall Camp- aighn on the morning of 29 our Division of the 9th Corps and a large body of Cavilry started towards Reams Station in the after noon about 5 oclock heavy cannonading and muskery could be heard in that direction it lasted about an hour The next day the rest of the 9 Corps and the 1st and 2d Division of our Corps Advanced out in front of the [ ? ] house they found the rebes pickets about ¼ of a mile from ours they drove them into there works and the 2d Division of our Corps charged the Rebels Works and took them and a fort and 3 pieces of Cannon and A large amount of Prisoners the Rebels had but a small force behind there Works our forces Advanced on and I beleave they are about 2 miles from the South Side road The next day the 2d Corps went to our left and Some of the 10 Corps but we have not heard eney thing from them yet it has rained verry hard hear the last 3 days I suppose this stops us from advanceing eney further for the preas ant we have not been engaged yet and I hope we will not we was building a Fort yesterday I think we will hold what we have got and Fortefy till we get the line seecure and then Advance further toward the left I think we will get Petersburgh after a while. The war looks now as though it would end this fall shure if the Northern States give Lincon as large a majority as the Soldiers will Lincon will be our next President and the war will close with out a doubt. how is dose N.H. stand for Lincon or Mc The last letter I had from home they was all well our town had filled her Quota which was 19 men by vol there will be no draft there they raised 47 Hundred dollars to pay there vol. We are receiving reinforcements evry day there is from 6 to 8 trains come up from city Point evry day loaded with Soldiers. Well I can not think of much more news to write this time The last letter I had from home Father said he intended to go East this Fall and Nathan was agoing to California this month I will send you my Picture as soon as I can get it taken I can not think of eney think else to write that would interrest you Give my best Respects to all Enquiring Friends and Write as soon as you get this From your Friend and Cousin Lloyd H.
