Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia; Wilderness, Virginia Historical Figures: Camp Stoneman D.C. June 8th 1865 My Darling Wife. Mary. Yours of the 2d inst. I received this afternoon. I am not surprised that you were sick if you were expecting that company. It is perhaps well enough to have relatives, but for a general thing the less the better You speak of Bernards children isn’t the oldest one like what was reported of her last fall. I expect they all take after their mother. A woman whose acquain= tance is not to be desired. Bernard ought to move into the far back= woods. Where Civilization hardly cometh. I hear thats one regt. of our Corps has been sent to bury the dead on the battle grounds of the Wilder ness and Spotsylvania. I would liked to have been sent there those old battlefields have an indiscribable charm to me. I would like to visit them all and mean to many of them sometime. Every soldiers I believe feels the same way. there is nothing pleasant about burying our fallen comrads. But there are many inci= dents to recall. And one in im= agination fights the battle over again. I have not written you in two days but you must not get discouraged. Although I confess I am almost. I received a letter from Mother and Ellen today. They want to hear from you I shall write them in a day or two. I send you with to- days paper Artemius Ward his programme. some good [ ? ] would like to see the old gent. himself. Good night and love a kisses Your Gardie [On Envelope:] Mrs. Mary B.
