Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Love Grand Rapids June 14th 1865. My Dear Husband. I received two papers from you last night for which please accept thanks, but that letter does not come yet. I guess it will this noon. To day is the day of Dan Rice big show but it is a bad day for it. it has rained hard all the morning and I see no signs of its stopping yet. I guess it is a pretty good thing for their horses look nicely. they went by here this morning. they had about one hundred horses. nearly all grays. and they looked splendid. I guess they keep them well. Evening Yours of the 8th and 10th with papers. I received to night. thanks. how glad I was to hear from you my darling. you are my darling. are you not. all my own. how sweet it is to know I can call you mine. If I could only make myself worthy of you. but it seems as though I never could. you seem so noble and good to me. how I wish you could hold me in your loving arms to night would I not be happy. happiness is no name for it. it would be bliss. I suppose “Artie” is with her husband to night. he is in Detroit and she started for there this morning. I suppose she is happy. or ought to be. but I believe there are other things she cares more for, than she does for him. Joel Guild is at home again on furlough. they say he is not well, but I guess he is not very sick. To morrow is rent day and I expect Mr. Mann will be here early in the morning. he is always on time when there is any thing to be made by it. June 15th I was sleepy last night and did not finish this and do not feel much like writing this morning. You ask if the oldest one of Bernards children isn’t like what was reported of her last fall. I think she is but think she is as good as her mother. none of them know any-thing. It stopped raining long enough for me to go to the post office last night but is pouring down as hard as ever again this morning. I am glad to see it for every thing was suffering for it. Love and much kisses, Your loving Wify. [On Envelope:] Lt. Gardner B. Clark 6th Regt. 1st A.C. Washington D.C.
