Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Moretown Vermont. January 12th 1864. Loved Husband Dear Gardner, Yours of January 5th Leonard brought me this morning. I was in hopes to hear that you had recieved that box. Father heard at Middlesex yesterday that the Army of the Potomac were about to move. That they were going to Harpers Ferry. We also hear that there is a call for one million men for sixty days and it is thought here that if they can be raised that the war will soon close. You speak of Kate Stowell and ask me if I dont think there is but one thing that will save her life. I do I know that Kate loves Uri and have known it although she has tried to hide it. I know not what Uris feelings are I did think at one time that he loved her. but it may have been a mask, only worn, as he thought. for his own benefit. Be it as it may, he won her to love him and he must be blind if he cannot see that she loves him. I recieved a letter from Uncle John and Edwin last night with little Carries Photo- graph. Uncle John writes that Mr. Merick is dead he died Saturday night Jan. 2d. his sickness was Pneumonia. Uncle John took care of him until the night before he died, when, he says he had to be taken home, having a very severe attack of the same disease. he write he is getting better and hopes to be about town in a few days. He says they have had one of the most severe storms of snow and wind that he every say. Edwin writes that he is about convinced that he shall be obliged to turn Civillian for a season. he said he had expected to start for the field last week but could not. The folks all send their love. Accept this with love and kisses from your own little Wife. Mary B. Clark. Gardner B. ClarkSis.
