Regiment: 1st U.S. Volunteers Sharpshooters Battles Mentioned: Historical Figures: Army of the Potomac Near Brandy Station V.a. December 17th 1863 My Mary. My Own Darling Wife. Although I have received no letter since writing you Sunday. I expect one to night. To-day has been a well disagreeable time. But let it storm. it relieves nearly all the ordinary duties of a soldier he can sit by his blazing hearth telling yarns or reading them as he chooses. I am getting fat, my clothes are rapidly becoming painful. My dress coat I can hardly button. I weigh one sixty four lbs. [ ? ]. I have written to day to Uncle John the only letter I have written any of the relatives at G. R. I had a letter from Sib. Tracy two months which I answered yesterday. She remarked what would Mary say to my writing to the girls. not presuming to know how could I answer. I have forgotten the names of those books you wanted. please write me and I will order them sent to Montpelier. for several reasons they had better be sent there I think. Umbrose Bell Saurer Brewers husband some time ago received a second Lieuts commission in a colored Regt. but it was revoked and he was ordered back to his Regt. he reported for duty. but engaged the best counsel Washington afforded to prosecute his claims and beat the Secretary of War. By contraband practices he had made several thousand dollars he throws that in the balance and the chances are he will come out ahead. I would rather have my commission in a colored regiment. My love and a kiss. MaryGardner If you have not sent that box please put in two or three bars of that Transparent soap [On Envelope:] Mrs. Gardner B. Clark Middlesex Vermont
