Regiment: 1st Michigan Infantry Battles Mentioned: Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia Historical Figures: Fredrick Md Sept 15 1862 Dear Florence We arrived here last night after a severe march of 3 days from Washington. All day yesterday we could hear the sound of a battle going on near Harpers Ferry. We march as soon as we can be supplied with rations. [  ?  ] little [  ?  ] and though few in numbers is full of fight. We had hoped that we were to be allowed rest but the [  ?  ] of the case seem to demand more work from the 5th Corps. I was quite unwell yesterday, but Am feeling better this AM. Our Div has 4 men Regs besides [  ?  ] Brigade added to it so that we are almost as good as men. Reminds me to the friends. We cannot tell that the battle of yesterday was decisive. We may have to engage them but feel that the 5th Corps will be used as [  ?  ] formerly intended [  ?  ]; as a “reserve” Corps. In haste + with much love Your  Will Byrns [On Envelope:] Miss Florence Clark Care, A. B. Clark Yalesburg Illinois We march beneath the stripes o Stars Gods banner let earth bless it Let to it [  ?  ] knee shall bow. And every [    ?    ] confess it.
