Regiment: 4th Michigan Calvary Battles Mentioned: Rocky Face Ridge, Georgia Historical Figures: George Thomas, Joseph E. Johnston, Nathan B. Forrest, William T. Sherman H’d Qrs 1st Brig 2nd Cavy Div Villanous Ga May 14, 1864 My dear Davidson There has been fighting for the last three days in front of us, not very heavy, but the cannonading could be distinctly heard. Johnson is now said to have evacuated Dalton and fallen back towards Rome. Our army, I suppose, is in pursuit. We are here to guard the flank & rear. Forrest is said to be pushing this way, and we expect to give him a taste of our quality. We have not yet been en- gaged. May be at any moment. Troops are passing at all hours. Genl Sherman & Thomas with a great part of the Army passed from Buz- zard’s Roast the day before yesterday. They went into Sugar Creek Valley south of Dalton thus compelling Johnson to “get out” or be surrounded. Great news from the Potomac, isn’t it? Am very well and expect to remain so. Love to all.                             Yours affec brother Robert J.D. Burns Kalzoo Mich. [On Envelope:] May 19, 1864 May 14 J. Davidson Burns Esq Kalamazoo Michigan
